Paull Lighthouse

A landmark and unique piece of local history has gone on sale in Paull.

The former lighthouse on Townend Road in Paull was built in 1836 and was built by the Hull branch of Trinity House – the general lighthouse authority. Sadly, it had a short life-span and was replaced by two warning lights at Thorngumbald Clough in 1870.

The defunct lighthouse has since become a popular private home with its previous owners running it as a guesthouse since they purchased it in 1985.

In an unusual move, the final judgement was taken out of the hands of the East Riding of Yorkshire Council which effectively twice ran out of time to give notice of its decision on the plan to demolish the old building and replace it with nine apartments and a café bar.

After months of uncertainty, the future of Hornsea's biggest employer has finally been secured after it was saved by a West Yorkshire building society.

The Hornsea Freeport shopping village has been taken over by the Leeds Building Society for an undiclosed sum after the previous owners, Hornsea Estates Limited and Hornsea Estates (No 2) Limited, entered into administration in July 2009. The building society established a wholly owned subsidiary, Headrow Commercial Property Services, in order to acquire the business.

East Yorkshire Council to buy erosion-threatened homes

Mike Brown's picture

East Riding Council is to help coastal communities by buying homes which residents fear could be lost to the sea.

Homeowners in Withernsea and along the East Coast could benefit from the £1.2m funding package secured by the council which will see them buy homes which could disappear as a result of coastal erosion over the next 15 years, and then lease them back to their owners.
